UT2K4: Expert Players' Guide to Torlan

Yes, it's just what you always wanted, a handy walkthrough for playing Onslaught the way the pros do. Follow these steps, and your clan will surely be feared and respected throughout the land.

Although there isn't too much of a difference, this guide assumes you're playing as the Blue team. Do everything in reverse if you're Red. Also, the guide is designed for the ideal number of 6 players on each team.

First things first.  Go here: http://www.planetunreal.com/ut2004/onslaughtmaps/torlan.shtml

This map shows you where every single item and pickup is located. To play effectively, you need to memorize this information. This should happen naturally after you've played Torlan for a few days.

Step 1 : Know your nodes

The Blue 1st node is #4, the Blue 2nd (tank) node is #5.

The Middle Node is #3

The Red 1st node is #2, the Red 2nd node is #1

To attack your opponents core, you have to build a line of nodes to the base. The fastest way to do this is by connecting 4,3,2. The alternate method is 4,5,1,2. To have the best chance of winning, you should attempt both routes at once, but concentrate most of your team on the shorter route. The same applies on defense - as #4 is your most important node, you must always protect it by holding #5 and #3.

When beginning a new game, here's what to do:

1) First person to the Manta jumps on the wing. Second player pilots.

2) Three players jump in the Hellbender

3) One player grabs the Avril and then enters the Raptor

Any extra players collect the extra health and shield and go to the core and prepare to teleport.

1) Both Manta riders eject, link to each other, and build the 1st node. When done, a second Manta spawns, and the two Mantas fly to the Red half of the map.

2) The Hellbender drives to the Central Canyon, and parks just past the node, shielding it from the Red team.

3) The Raptor pilot flies to the Blue 2nd node and touches it, but doesn't stay to build.

2) The driver of the Hellbender gets out and builds the node, while the other two players provide cover fire from the truck. The side turret gunner should shoot out a constant stream of shock cores towards the Red area to ward off any attackers.

3) After starting the Blue 2nd node, the Raptor pilot flies to the top of the tower to retrieve the Redeemer.

The Raptor pilots needs to communicate with the team at this point, telling them that he either has the Redeemer and is about to fire it, or that the Enemy team has it, and everyone at vulnerable nodes needs to watch for it.

This is the critical junction.

1) If Blue team controls the middle node AND the Raptor pilot got the Redeemer, he should land near the Red 1st node and destroy it with the Redeemer.

If Blue has the middle node but not the Redeemer, the Raptor and the two Mantas should rush the Red 1st node and destroy it before the Red team uses the Redeemer.

3) If Blue did not get the middle node, the Mantas should attack the Red 2nd node, while everyone else should attack the middle and/or defend the Blue 1st node.

2) Of the 3 people originally in the Hellbender - after the node is complete, one man should stay in the truck and hold the middle node, switching between the two turrets as necessary. The other 2 players should teleport to the top of the mountain. One should take a Manta, the other should take the newly-spawned Hellbender and park it on the pad (marked with a '2').

From this spot, the Hellbender's twin beam can control the bottom half of the map, by shooting snipers off the Red Tower, destroying all vehicles coming out the Red Base, and shooting the Red 1st node/guarding it when under control.

If you're playing on the Red side, this small niche serves the same purpose.

It's vital to destroy the Red 1st node, but not that crucial to build your own node there yet. As long as that node is gone, Red team's entire offense is crippled. All Mantas and Raptors should be in this area, focusing on one of the two nodes.

The only thing that should stop you is a tank, which the Red team is usually rolling towards the middle at this time. Although you might be able to fight the tank and win, it's much better to ignore it and attack nodes. The two Red nodes are on different planes, so you can always safely attack one where the tank can't reach you.

Once you manage to capture the Red 1st node, you must eliminate any chance of a comeback. The Hellbender defenseman that was guarding the middle canyon should drive to spot 2, where he can defend without being attacked from the Red Base. Another defender (whoever built the node) should jump in the stationary turret. Both players can refill on link and heal the node as necessary.

Everyone else should assault the Red Powercore with Mantas and Raptors. If turrets are attacking you, remember that they all have a blind spot. Turret 1 can't hit point A, Turret 2 can't hit B. With Turret 3, you have to be a little trickier, and hover at either A or B, such that the bridges are between yourself and the turret.

The Red team will attempt to grab Avrils and shoot you down, so keep an eye on point C and run over anyone who tries to get an Avril. A Manta can also fly up the hill outside the base (D) and jump at the last instant, to land on the Red Tower, another good place to attack from.

Another great base-attacking spot is this cranny, just north of the base. Fire away from here with a Manta and duck away when the Avrils come at you, or drive a tank here and wipe out anything that moves.

Plan B

Against an organized opponent, you might have to modify the strategy slightly, as follows:

1) At the beginning, 3 people get in the Manta, two on the wings, one driver. They fly to the Blue 1st node, and the passengers jump off and build the node. The Manta pilot continues to the Blue 2nd node and builds it.

2) This leaves the Raptor to immediately fly up to the top of the Central Tower and protect the Redeemer from the enemy.

If you are playing in a ladder, there will be no Redeemer. The Raptor pilot should run interference, and attack the enemy going for their first node. If you can kill the Manta coming out of the Red Base, or at least slow it down, your team will have a big advantage.

3) The Hellbender goes to the center with only 2 people, who man the two turrets. Their goal is to capture the center node, or at least hold it so that the enemy doesn't complete it.

4) After the 2 players at the Blue 1st finish, they rush to the Red 2nd and attack it.

5) Everything else proceeds as noted above.

Problems you might encounter:

1) The Red team attacks you right at the very beginning. Sometimes a Manta will try to attack right off the bat, hoping to throw off your gameplan. This is a big mistake for them, as their node-building will be one step behind yours. Remember that your initial nodes can't be harmed, just focus on avoiding the enemy. If you see a Manta coming, the Hellbender or Raptor should be able to take it out easily. If you also have a Manta, just jump back in and fly on to your next target.

2) You didn't capture the Redeemer or the middle node. In this case, you cannot under any circumstance let your Blue 1st node be destroyed. Commit half your team to defending the Blue 1st while the others attack the middle. Forego the Mantas on defense and use Turrets, Trucks, and the Tank. If you see or hear a Redeemer, warn your team verbally and shoot it down with a Turret or the Minigun. Canny enemies will get close to the node before firing their Redeemer, so keep careful watch to shoot down all Raptors that come near.

3) You can't stay organized as a team. The two keys to effecting teamwork are planning and communication. Before the game starts, all players should know what their job is. The most-skilled with each vehicle should get first claim. During the game, one player should be the leader and give orders, telling teammates where the redeemer is, where the enemy tank is going, and which nodes to concentrate on. The Raptor pilot has the best view of the map and is ideal for this.

4) You get killed all the time. Don't fight unless you've got the upper hand. All vehicles have a strength and a weakness, use them to your advantage.

The Scorpion's net is great against Mantas.

The Hellbender's turret can blow away Scorpions, Mantas, and Raptors.

The Raptor can freely attack Scorpions and Mantas from up high.

The Manta is best against foot soldiers, but can dodge around a tank if you're careful.

The Goliath is great against pretty much anything.

The Turret is handy for overpowering Raptors and Scorpions.

5) The Enemy team are all sitting on top of the hill and spamming Avrils at you. Tell them to go to hell.
