Atari Lynx
Atari's foray into the
burgeoning handheld
market, this device was my
favourite at the time.
Actually the first colour
handheld, this machine
should have been the
market leader. Sadly yet
another bad marketing
campaign saw this machine
falter and then fail in
front of rampaging
Nintendo power.
Unbelievably the Black
& White Nintendo
gameboy rose to the
challenge and one the day.

Bandai
Wonderswan/Wonderswan
Colour
Small, pocket-sized and
light on power. This is a
very thin unit, and except
for the bulge in the back
for the SINGLE AA-battery,
this until is pretty much
flat. As the picture
shows, there are two
directional controllers.
Games are apparently
designed for "portrait"
mode with both direction
controllers at the bottom,
or the normal "landscape"
mode with both direction
controllers on the left.
This system doesn't cater
to lefties at all.
Controls have been
simplified. Sound is
controlled via a button,
and there are three sound
settings: high, low and
off. There is NO headphone
jack. There is a single
contrast wheel for the
screen. Power is via a
simple slide controller
that is well protected to
prevent accidental power
changes. There is no place
to plug in an AC adaptor,
so this is a battery-only
device. There is also a
link port for head to head
gaming. Only released in
Japan but is available by
importing. Rumour has it
that it will be released
in the US sometime in the
third quarter of 2001.

Gamepark 32
A very new handheld
device from Korea,
this machine is very
similar to the Gameboy
Advance though has
more features.
Availability of
productivity tools
combined with PC and
wireless connectivity.
This machine if
released worldwide
before the GBA would
probably have been a
smash hit.

The only known
Gamepark emulator
other than official
company demo's. This
is a very early
release with few
features. You will
require the bios files
to run it. I would
suggest using
www.google.com to
search.

Nec Turbo Express
While Nintendo and
Sega were in 8-bit
land, NEC was already
at 16-bits. In pursuit
of their 16-bit
vision, the TurboGrafx
Express played
virtually all of the
HuCard games for the
console version. At
the time, this was
revolutionary, a
portable system with
the power of a
console, and with one
set of games. And for
the fans of import
titles, there was the
HuCard Converter,
allowing TurboGrafx
systems to play
Japanese titles There
is also a
communications jack
for multi-player
gaming, headphone and
contrast controls. The
TurboGrafx Express has
a dedicated port for
the TurboVision TV
Tuner accessory,
allowing you to watch
TV. You can use the
antenna, or you can
plug in an external
antenna or use the A/V
connector and plug in
a VCR! A short while
after the NEC
TurboGrafx release,
Nintendo and Sega
released their 16-bit
consoles. Sega
released the Genesis
and later Nintendo
released their Super
Nintendo. Despite NEC
being first to the
market, NEC suffered a
rare condition of too
much, too little, too
soon. The system
lacked the software
development that the
Genesis and SNES
enjoyed. While the
TurboGrafx was first,
it wasn't able to
compete once Sega and
Nintendo joined the
16-bit marketplace.

Neo Geo Pocket/Pocket
Colour
SNK's attempt at the
handheld market was
quite a nice sureprise
however the system was
soon pulled after only
a brief time. At first
glance, the Neo Geo is
just a portable video
game system. If you
turn it on and don't
insert a game
cartridge, you
discover that this
isn't just a gaming
device. Not only does
this little device
keep time, but it can
also function as an
alarm clock,horoscope
generator, calendar
and time converter.

Nintendo Gameboy/Gameboy
Colour
The gameboy for some odd
reason took the world by
storm and to date is the
largets selling handheld/
console to date. Meagre
graphics and originally
black&white (colour
version released very
late) it was more the
software lineup and
marketing power that took
it to the top. Still
selling well today after
10 years.

Nintendo Gameboy
Advance
Nintendo's newest
Handheld format, the
GBA is a 32 bit
landscape successor of
the immensely popular
Gameboy. Taking a leaf
out of Sony's book,
it's also backwards
compatible with older
gameboy/gameboy colour
games and produces
some nice crisp
graphics with awesome
sound. Now if only
they'd write new games
rather than stale old
conversions.

Nintendo Virtual
Boy
To date, Nintendos
only product failure.
A portable but bulky
virtual headset that
displays 3D images
using a 32-bit engine,
but only uses the
colour red which could
lead to sore eyes
after a hour of
playing (The machine
even has build in
break periods every 45
minutes to rest your
eyes for a few
minutes). This sytem
was barely on the
market for a few
months before Nintendo
saw the writing on the
wall and cancelled the
product.
