Mame WIP

Was every game released in Japan a mahjong game??

2003-01-31: R. Belmont sent in a very preliminary System 32 Multi driver in which basically only the MultiPCM sound works, nothing else. Aaron Giles forwarded Derrick Renaud's improvements to the discrete sound in Fire Truck, Super Bug and Monte Carlo. Nicola Salmoria added Orange Club - Maruhi Kagai Jugyou, Mahjong-zukino Korinai Menmen, Idol no Himitsu and Kanatsuen no Onna to the Nichibutsu Mahjong drivers. Jarek Burczynski sent in a very preliminary Wink driver which doesn't work because the main CPU ROMs are encrypted.

2003-01-30: Nicola Salmoria improved the way in which the Crazy Climber bootleg is decrypted, and he fixed the waterfall and sea graphics in Twin Eagle and sound in Caliber 50, Sokonuke Taisen Game and Blandia.

2003-01-29: Aaron Giles added Area 51 / Maximum Force Duo to the Cojag driver (your HDDs are obsolete now) and fixed the reset problems. Malice submitted patches to the Jaleco Mega System 32 driver, making Ryuusei Janshi Kirara Star and Hayaoshi Quiz Ousa Ketteisen boot but they aren't playable yet. Bryan McPhail fixed some compiling problems that happened with Visual C.

2003-01-28: Nathan Woods fixed some MESS-specific code. Brian A. Troha fixed the DIP switch settings in Twin Eagle 2, though it still doesn't work. smf sent in a preliminary Fire Fox driver written by him and Chris Hardy, but the laserdisc emulation has not been done yet so there's not much to see. Shiriru fixed Eco Fighters that was broken by one of his earlier updates.

2003-01-27: David Haywood added Ribbit! to the Sega System C driver but it has some unemulated protection so it doesn't work. Smitdogg fixed the sound levels in the Mitchell driver.

2003-01-26: Stephane Humbert added a US version of Willow to the CPS-1 driver and a few different versions of Tron to the MCR-2 driver. Brian A. Troha added a few different versions of World Class Bowling to the itech32 driver and fixed various problems in the SSV driver, including sprite and tile offsets in Storm Blade. smf fixed some blitter bugs in the DOS version and added aspect ratio support. Bryan McPhail sent in a preliminary driver for Avengers in Galactic Storm, it is playable but has many graphics glitches and other problems. Bryan McPhail also fixed a small bug in the Edward Randy raster effects. Bernd Wiebelt added a generic random number generator to the core.

Obviously it is too early to report on a release date, speculation points to sometime in 2004.

    Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
    Posted by VmprHntrD: 20 January, 2003 - 9:42 AM

Sorry about the delay here on this and the others below, been out since Friday at the stables and stuff. Anyways, big news for Castlevania fans, a new installment of the series in the similar design concept of favorite Castlevania SOTN is coming to the GBA, and very shortly -- this May. Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow will be the largest departure yet from the series as for once the hero will not even be blood related at all to the Belmont line, but even furthermore the game is set slightly in the future in the year 2035. You play a student, Soma Cruz, and you are about to see the first full solar eclipse of the new century from Transylvania, and you end up blacking out and awaking inside of Dracula's castle. Your mission, escape alive, and with the use of over 100 enemy souls that can be adapted to be used as weapons and tools to survive the age old hell house. Hopefully the game will turn out quite good, and to see how it looks my advice is to try a site like perhaps IGN Pocket, Magic Box, etc to see a few images that were made public.

    Gradius Lives
    Posted by VmprHntrD: 20 January, 2003 - 9:34 AM

Let's hope Konami does one right for once because here comes later this year the fifth installment of the Gradius series, again just on the PlayStation 2. Gamers.com reports the game will be designed around the PS2 hardware, use 3D graphics, and Konami has hired Treasure (it's staff were the former team who made all of Konami's best titles including Gradius) to do this game right. The game is also claimed to use a new control scheme to make for more control than ever, so we'll have to wait and see. Check Gamers.com for some screen shots.

    Gamecube Now With Free Game
    Posted by VmprHntrD: 20 January, 2003 - 9:31 AM

Out of Gameinfowire it seems Nintendo has gone back into the business of packing freebie games with a console and with no extra charge (unlike the Mario Sunshine bundle.) Between February 9th and May you can get a Gamecube for the usual $150, but with *YOUR* choice of Metroid Prime, Resident Evil 0, Mario Party 4, or Starfox Adventures. Seems like a smart idea not pitched by them I believe since the SuperNES era, and I imagine it should help out sales with choices like that.

    Atari800DC Emulator Version 0.75
    Posted by Mojo: 19 January, 2003 - 12:14 PM

Here is what's new in this release:

  • uses Atari800 cvs code base as of jan-11-2003

  • reverted the sound changes which were introduced in the 0.72 version - the sound should be similar to 0.71.

  • saved states on the VMU now show a Atari icon. Due to a change in the layout of the state save file, saved states of previous versions aren't recognized.

  • changing video mode of emulated Atari now doesn't change the video mode used to drive the screen. These 2 video mode settings (what the emulated Atari thinks the video mode is, and the video mode used by the DC) can now be changed independently. Setting them to different values will disable double buffering, so best results are achieved if both settings are the same.

  • buttons B, X, Y on the 1st DC controller can now be redefined to generate simulated key presses on the keyboard. If they are redefined, the Start, Select, and Option keys can be entered in the keyboard emulation screen.

    Posted by Mojo: 19 January, 2003 - 5:51 AM

Version 3.4.1 has a small change. A new file is added to the package, called chd md5.ini.
You probably already know what this file does... but I'll explain anyway: it contains MD5 checksums for all .chd files supported by M.A.M.E. 0.63!

Be aware that this file has checksums based on the entire .chd file, not just based on the file header. Since Emu Loader can't get the MD5 value like MAME does, it needs to check the entire file. Well, that's the reason why I created this file, so you can be sure that your gamename.chd file is the right one ;-)

Mame Classic Front End for Windows
    Posted by Mojo: 17 January, 2003 - 18:21 PM

The first Windows Front-End for M.A.M.E. to feature independent default settings
for raster and vector games! Works with Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000 and XP.

New in the version for 0.63:

  • Added my own effect option, AScan75. This automatically uses a vertical or horizontal scanline effect based on the game.
  • Added the new RDTSC, Skip Disclaimer, and Skip Gameinfo options.
  • Fixed a problem that would sometimes cause MAME Classic to crash upon exiting a game.
  • MAME Classic now creates the listinfo.txt file faster because it does not add the information from the history.dat and mameinfo.dat files if they exist.

    Got this from Phuck-IGN:

At their press event yesterday, Konami finally revealed their plans for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a license they acquired earlier last year. The new game, which is set to hit Sony's PlayStation 2, and the Nintendo GameCube and Game Boy Advance, will be a 3D action game that hopes to capture the magic of the 1992 SNES classic, Turtles in Time. Not much else is known about the game, except that players can play as either Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, or Donatello as they battle the evil Shredder. Konami will be releasing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in North America in October 2003

    Patches for Console Games?!
    Posted by VmprHntrD: 16 January, 2003 - 10:32 AM

In a scary twist of 'I told you so' fate our favorite PC wanting to be a console Xbox will be having it's first upgrade patch to one of its popular games. The creators of Unreal Championship shipped their product with a few bugs and have now corrected them per the complaints of owners on their forums. The patch will address the issues with: frame rate, real time voice control, stats, team balancing, TAG Rifle exploits, and bugs that let you fall outside of the maps. It's not certain yet if this will be a downloadable fix or seperate. I hope this isn't a sign of trends to come, console games ending up with massive buggy releases with bugfixes one after another as PC titles have been getting for years. If you wish to see more this one came directly from the forums over at Infogrames homepage.

    Enix and Square Deal Settled
    Posted by VmprHntrD: 16 January, 2003 - 10:27 AM

According to Games and Fun the problem between the merging of Enix and Square has been settled. Originally the majority share holder in Square (Masufumi Miyamoto) didn't approve of the .81 to 1 value he'd get from the merger and put it in jeopardy. A deal has been made though where the value will now be at .85 to 1 for Square shareholders into Enix. Barring any other strange issues the merger should be made complete as planned by February 12th.

    Quote:

Smoothmame is a win32 mame derivative, and was created for users who desire smooth scrolls/displays in games that use a non-standard refresh rate of 50 Hz or higher.

Therefore when using it, all games in mame will run at exactly 60 Hz. Usually this will end up increasing the games original speed by a small amount - but sometimes it may slow it down by a very tiny margin in a few others (1 fps or less). In those games, the decrease in speed is barely - if at all - noticeable. (Note: Those games which were not changed would include all the 30/30, 40/40, and 45/45 ones which I purposely left alone since the speed increase would have been too abrupt)

The home conversions of Soul Calibur 2 get some (odd) console specific extras
    Posted by DarkCloud: 14 January, 2003 - 23:20 PM

In a very strange move on Namco's part the home releases of the hit arcade fighter Soul Calibur 2 will see console specific extra characters.

::On the Playstation 2 side Heihachi Mishima of Tekken fame will be a playable character.

::On the Gamecube side Link of Zelda fame will make his first real fighter appearance.

::And on the Xbox side Spawn of...err Spawn fame will be a playable character.

::All home conversions will recieve the Extra Character necrid(designed by Todd McFarlene, creater of Spawn)

While the characters don't exactly fit into the SC2 universe I'm not one to complain about any form of extras in my games...it's just odd to see Spawn duking it out with Nightmare or Astaroth.=P

To go along with the extra characters it seems that Namco may be considering some form of online service for the fighter for the Xbox and possibly PS2 conversions.

Soul Calibur 2 will go on sale in Japan 3/27/2003 with US and PAL region releases TBA.

    Change Log

    These drivers have improved GRAPHICS:

    These drivers have improved SOUND:
    • Samples support in Subroc-3D [Dave France]
    • Fixed noise frequency in the Exidy games. [Jim Hernandez]
    • Preliminary Namco NA sound support. [Phil Stroffolino]
    Other drivers changes:
    • Partially simulated the protection in Birdie Try [Angelo Salese]
    • Improved decryption in Quiz F1 1-2 Finish, it's still incomplete though. [Angelo Salese]
    • Fixed ball position recognition in Golfing Greats. [Olivier Galibert]
    Changes to the main program:
    • New options -nodisclaimer and -nogameinfo to disable startup screens. Warnings about incorrect emulation are not disabled. [Aaron Giles]
    • Replaced RDTSC timing with QueryPerformanceCounter. This should fix problems on SpeedStep notebooks. It seems, however, that it causes even worse problems on other machines. Therefore, the old behaviour can be forced with the new -rdtsc option. [smf]
    Source:
    • Now compiled with MinGW 2.0/GCC 3.2. There might be bugs caused by the new compiler, let us know.
    • All new, much better, YM2413 emulation. [Jarek Burczynski]
    • Drum support in YM2608 emulation (check e.g. Tail 2 Nose). [Jarek Burczynski]
    • Moved most of the file I/O out of the OS depndant code and into the core. Added two new types, mame_file and osd_file, which enforce better type checking throughout the system (and prevents confusing the two). Instead of calling osd_fopen, osd_fread, osd_fwrite, etc., you now call mame_fopen, mame_fread, mame_fwrite, etc. The osd_* calls are reserved to the core.
    • All the ZIP handling is done in the mame_file functions, so it will be inherited by all ports. [Aaron Giles]
    • [Win32] The diff, snap, cfg, nvram, etc. directories are created automatically if they don't exist the first time MAME tries to create a file there. [Aaron Giles]
    • MIPS III/IV CPU cores. [Aaron Giles]
    • ADSP-2115 CPU support. [Aaron Giles]
    • TMS32025 CPU core. [Quench]
    • Fixed YMF278B emulation. [R.Belmont]
    New games supported:
    • Off Road Challenge [Aaron Giles]
    • Shrike Avenger [Aaron Giles]
    • War Gods [Aaron Giles]
    • Grudge Match [Aaron Giles]

    Square/Enix Merge in Trouble
    Posted by VmprHntrD: 11 January, 2003 - 10:30 AM

This story off of GameFront caught my eye having to do with the Enix and Square merger company deal that was in the news. While Square and Enix have already announced their intentions to consolidate into one RPG producing giant, the Nihon Keizai Shinbun is reporting that their cooperation isn't exactly a done deal.

In today's edition, the newspaper is reporting that the largest shareholder in Square Co. Ltd, Masafumi Miyamoto, is disatisfied with what his cut in Square/Enix would be if the deal should go through. According to the agreement, those who have shares in Square will receive 0.81 in the new company for every one they own in the old. This would place Miyamoto's owned percentage of Square/Enix at 40, a percentage that he isn't happy with.

According to the paper, and a report from a Square spokesperson, the companies are trying to work out the problem so that when the next meeting occurs, on February 12th, they'll be able to finalize the deal.

    Final Fantasy Origins
    Posted by VmprHntrD: 11 January, 2003 - 10:26 AM

According to Phuck-IGN Square announced today that it will bring the PlayStation remakes of Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II to North America in the form of Final Fantasy Origins. Set for release in April, the compilation will feature both games on a single disc. As previously noted, these games are remakes of the original titles that debuted on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987 (1990 in the US) and 1988, respectively. Both games have been given a graphical overhaul from an 8-bit to a 16-bit level, and will feature something not even invented at the time of the games' releases: some of Squaresoft's famous CG cutscenes. Furthermore, a number of new events designed to enhance the games' storylines have also been introduced into the game. Not to be outdone, the soundtracks have been given an overhaul, and now feature opening theme songs.

Final Fantasy Origins will also include a number of special features on the disc. Both games will now have new gameplay modes (essentially difficulty levels) that will help make the games accessible for younger players and a "memo save" feature will allow for quick saves on the world map. A new bestiary will be added for players' assistance, and an art gallery showcasing Yoshitaka Amano's artwork will be also be available. In order to add "replay value" to the games, a photo gallery is unlocked when you finish Final Fantasy, and more pictures are added upon replay of the games.

    Gameboy Advance SP?

Looks like in a matter of a month Gameboy Advance is going to debut with a very interesting facelift and then some. Finally a time now when no one can complain about blindness and eye strain, Nintendo has after 13 years done it -- a portable with a lighting solution. Planet Gamecube has the story and a nice set of pictures of the unit coming soon. The unit, much like the popular Afterburner kit uses a front lighting solution, one that can be turned on or off (which extends battery life almost double.) The unit also goes back to the traditional Gameboy look being it's tall, not long, but like a modern mobile phone it folds down into a 3 inch box which is less than 1 inch thick. Interesting enough though, this one only uses a rechargable lithium ion battery (with 3 hour recharge time) and not the traditional set (or so) of AA batteries. The unit will debut in February in Japan (around 12,500 yen) and then mid-late March in the U.S.($99USD) and Europe (around €129 - €139).
